Of Freelancing and Working at Home

My experience at the hospital was over and I wanted a job so much but it’s hard when I’m gonna study for a really important test at the same time. So I thought, why not do something online? It seems like a great idea since you can work for only a few hours each day depending on your contract.

I tried signing up for sites like Elance and Freelancer but I’ve only been active in Upwork and I landed myself a job there last year. 2 weeks ago, someone invited me to apply for their job posting. They were looking for a social media manager and I’m the right fit because I’ve worked as an SMM last year on the same site. So, I didn’t really look for a job, I was lucky they contacted me and it was perfect timing. It was for a popular company who sells tanning products in Australia. The owner hired me after loving what I’ve done on a trial work. What I basically do is, I’m the one who looks for photos to post on their Instagram account, schedule them ahead of time, think of strategies to attract followers and potential customers. They asked me to write a blog post for them each week too. It has been great so far and the owner, who is a nice woman, compliments my work. It pays well, even bigger than what nurses earn here in our country.

If you want to try having a job online, check those site out and who knows? There are various of jobs you can do there. If you’re a blogger, you even have more advantage. You can write for another blog, be a freelance writer, a web researcher, a call center agent, a tutor, a designer, or a social media manager just like me.

THE PROS:

  • Not having a specific schedule just as long as you do your work in a specific number of hours a week or a day. It depends on the job but usually, you don’t really get to have schedules
  • You can work in the comfort of your home. You can work in your pajamas and you don’t have to get ready to go to work every day
  • More time with family and for yourself
  • You can work anywhere you want. At a resort, a coffee shop, your friend’s house, basically anywhere with wifi connection
  • You can save more money because you don’t have to pay for gas to go to work, no fares,  you can cook your own meal at home, and no tax

THE CONS:

  • So many distractions that sometimes you couldn’t concentrate on your work
  • Not having enough social interaction so make sure to go out with friends once in a while to balance things out
  • Sometimes you can’t help but procrastinate so even if there’s no schedule, it’s important to set your own
  • People might think online job isn’t a real job and sometimes you have to explain what you do
  • Self-motivation and discipline are the key cuz I admit, sometimes working at home makes me lazy

It all depends on your attitude whether you’re into this kind of work. As for me, I’m grateful I have this job and I enjoy every minute of it.

I’m doing some freelance on the side but I’m thinking of doing it full time eventually. The schedule thing is definitely a real double edged sword, I hear you on that one!

Happy Thanksgiving to you! ^^ Yeah, I do agree that you can get distractions at home, but it can’t be too hard to minimalize it. I’m glad you’re able to do this, it mostly saves up on gas, to be honest.

Congrats on securing another job online! it’s definitely something I’ve been in and out of but now getting back in, but on a local level as well steadily branching out into the online level. That’s a great point to apply at the freelancing sites you mentioned so I’ll have to check those out. Good luck on your endeavours!

Thanks for sharing bits on your freelance life, Alissa!! 🙂 Wishing you luck as you venture into your career path 😀

Thanks Denise! 🙂 You should really try to do both kind of job to see what works best for you. I only work 3 hours a day but my salary is more than I would earn when I’m a nurse in a private hospital. I can really save a lot from this job since I still live with my parents. haha. Hope everything goes well for you!

Congratulations for the new job, girl!!! An online job sounds wonderful. I have been a freelance article writer before and it was a fun job. It was a small, two weeks project and they paid a good amount. I will probably continue after college if I get a chance before university.

Congrats to your new job! Freelancing requires a lot of discipline especially to time management. Like what you’ve mention, working at home makes us feel lazy. I couldn’t agree more to that! I had a job at upwork before, it was called odesk back then. I was a virtual assistant for few months there, and it pays pretty good, I can say. I quit coz I had to prioritize my schooling.

That is so interesting! I’m glad that the company you did a trial for asked you to come back on board. You must’ve really impressed them! I do online classes, which pretty much is synonymous to an online job but doesn’t pay (Lol) and I totally get what you mean when you say that you really need to set a schedule of your own as well as be disciplined.

I typically venture out to coffee shops to do my school work, have you tried that out? It definitely lessens the distractions 🙂

I’ve worked before, and had my first work in Upwork too. I actually stopped just after 4 months of working because I can’t seem to work during the scheduled time, I get distracted and tempted to do something else. But working at home is fun, tbh. Congrats on the job, Alissa! 🙂

I tried working online as an article writer/rewriter for an international website before. The pay is good, yes! But it gets tiring sometimes having to write about the same topic. Now I know why I’m never into a niche blog. Haha.

I have also thought of quitting my corporate job and work freelance but I don’t think I can work at home with all the temptations to just eat and sleep and become lazy haha But who knows, I’m still not closing my doors. Haha

Congratulations on getting online jobs! Enjoy 🙂

Working at home sounds like a dream! It would be nice to be nice to not have to drive out on rainy days and suck! However I do think that I’d miss the everyday interactions with coworkers. I also don’t know if I could trust myself to not be so distracted. I would just want to eat and lay around all day. What a great opportunity and I hope you continue to enjoy it. 🙂

Hi Alissa, this is a very informative post! I think 3 weeks ago, I’ve stumbled upon Upwork too. I sent about 10 proposals and was lucky enough someone chose me for an $80 writing job, but I had to pass it because of conflicts in school. Freelance really is no joke, your chances are 1/10 really. But thanks so much for this! I love your blog <3
