Notes to Self as I Turn 24

Turning 24 still feels surreal sometimes. I look in the mirror and I see the same person I’ve seen a year ago, 2 years ago, 3 years ago or more. Like, nothing has really changed. It’s not just the way I look, sometimes, I still feel like I haven’t really accomplished anything big in my life but I guess I’ll just have to wait for that. Nevertheless, I learn something new every year even though some of it, I’ve learned it the hard way. Here are some things I should remember, things I’ve come to realize on my 23rd year:

  1. If you can love the wrong one so much, imagine how much you can love the right one.
  2. No matter how strong the feelings of your heart is, don’t forget to also listen to your brain. Don’t ignore your intuition, most of the time they’re right.
  3. If you think they’re worth fighting for even if they cause you pain, remember that you’re worth it too. Don’t waste your time for someone who doesn’t deserve you.
  4. Finding your passion isn’t just about careers and money. It’s about finding your authentic self. The one you’ve buried beneath other people’s needs.
  5. It’s okay to feel lost or uncertain but remember that nothing will happen if you don’t do anything to make it happen.
  6. You couldn’t change or save people. You can only love them.
  7. Cherish every moment with your family and friends. Time will come that you will go your separate ways.
  8. It’s okay to Netflix and chill by yourself and I mean literally watch Netflix on your laptop and just chill. Lol. Just in case you have another definition for that.
  9. Stay strong in your faith and belief. You may have a lot of questions but don’t ever doubt it.
  10. Accept the fact that you will grow apart from people. Understand when someone no longer positively affects your life, let them go. Don’t hinder your growth.

I love #4. And I totally agree that it is not just about money and career. Passion is about finding what you really love and enjoy. It is what gives your life a meaning. 🙂 Great post!

Thanks Cheryle! 🙂 Sometimes passion doesn’t coincide with your career. I think it’s a bold move when you chose passion but it’s the most fulfilling.

Love this list! Especially number 10 is so important, it is so important to know that it is completely okay to grow apart and to not get along with everyone all the time 🙂

It really is. Don’t be with someone who brings nothing but negativity in your life and makes your life toxic. Cute people who don’t let you grow.

These are some great life lessons you share here. I am sorry you had to learn some the hard way. I can also relate to feeling like I’ve not accomplished anything big and I’m 29, but as you say, following your passion is not about careers or money.

Girl! That first one took my breath away. There is so much to be said about that line and I feel so connected to you through this list. I may not be 24 or even 21 yet, but this list is universal and reminder that self is more precious than gold. Thank you for this list and girl, you’ve got this. Just because you didn’t change the world, doesn’t mean you haven’t positively affected lives and touched people. Case in point: me right now with this post 🙂 Have heart, much love!

#4: “Finding your passion isn’t just about careers and money. It’s about finding your authentic self. The one you’ve buried beneath other people’s needs.”

This one stuck the most for me. I just recently turned 23 myself and sometimes it can be hard to chase passions because you have others to think about too. But we’ll get there. Oh we will. 🙂 Now, you’ve inspired me to make a list for myself too Alisa. Great job on this one!

I have to agree with the first one, though I’m not saying he’s really “the one” right now (I don’t want to assume yet, but we’ll get there someday!). But really, all those hurts inflicted upon me many years ago, they only taught me to truly love the only person I have now. And yes to #4. That certainly applies to blogging, yes? Currently I’m in a mix between the two (career and money), but I always try to keep everything in line with my passion. Hopefully in the few years to come, I get to discover myself without having to worry about other things. Everything else here is really great, I enjoyed reading them, and it made me ponder mine, too! 🙂

I believe that some of us who loved the wrong ones learned a lot of things about love and these realizations will help us love the right one. Just be hopeful and don’t worry too much. Just enjoy but keep your mind open. 🙂 And yes, the passion I refer to there can be blogging.

Happy birthday, Alissa! I turn 24 in December! I can already relate to a lot of the pointers you’ve mentioned, especially #5 and #9. Sometimes, I can’t help but feel lost but then realise that life is all about finding out about yourself and figuring out the answers to all your questions one day at a time. It can certainly be overwhelming sometimes, but then some time passes and you look back and wonder why you stressed so hard! Haha. Life’s a learning process, and even older people like our parents are still learning new things everyday! xo, sharon | http://www.stylelullaby.com
